Maneki-neko, also known as a beckoning cat, is believed to symbolize different aspects of fortune depending on the paw it raises: one with its right paw raised signifies "wealth", while one with its left paw raised signifies "people" and "happiness." Japanese restaurants often decorate their establishments with both types of maneki-neko, hoping to attract prosperity. I found this maneki-neko hiding on the awning above a restaurant door in Yanaka, appropriately dubbed "Cat Town".
