About The Artwork

Still life with pink roses, photograph, limited edition 1/25, 12x8cm, framed. Natalia Jezova is a London-based artist. Artist Statement Exploring the theme of the ephemeral nature of things and how various objects can carry and evoke different meanings, testimonies, and memories in the context of Natalia’s practice allowed her to analyze the subjectiveness of the way that these objects can be perceived. Her works are multilayered and have various encoded meanings through symbolisms of objects and colours. Natalia is an artist as collector. Her art work is based on objects she has collected over many years, including photographs, posters, magazines, antique costumes, accessories, armoire, ritual objects, military uniforms. The subject matter and content of her work is based on the idea of justice, human rights, gender, and cross-cultural issues experienced through an evocation of the phenomenon of collective memory triggered by the objects. Natalia is particularly fascinated by Old Master paintings; their mysterious use of dramatic light, masterful compositions and color palette, unique placements of objects. Many of objects depicted in Old Masters Still Life paintings are symbolic – they remind the viewer of an the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures. A still life is motionless - still, tranquil, static. Stillness can be a condition of the moment or of forever as existing still. A still life doesn’t speak and it can’t listen. It cannot move but it puts the viewer’s eyes in motion. Natalia is intrigued by the paradoxes of visual illusions and the various tricks that our minds can play on us. Our eyes, hearts and brains never cease in their attempt to resolve the puzzle of the visual world. It intrigues her that on micro, as well as, global level the world is multi-layered and is never what it appears to be. This idea can be interpreted in many ways; essentially the world is an illusion, which is often successfully exploited in a visual games.
