Astrid's story is about staying true to her childhood-self. Infatuated with all things “cowboy” – thundering hooves, wild mustangs and freedom – she grew up inspired by a mother whose teens were spent roving Wyoming’s infamous Tetons on horseback. Her mother's influence lies at the root of Astrid's voracious thirst for studying the horse and the cultures around the world within which it subsists. Through experimenting with contemporary photographic processes she explores both physical form and inner spirit of the horse. In a bid to investigate and revere man’s relationship with horses all over the world, it is her hope to present an evocative combination of digital artistry and powerful imagery through her studies. Astrid's work is influenced by what she observes and by her childhood love of animals – in particular, the horse. Her style evolves with a graceful flow of curiosity, free to explore different mediums, digital processes and printing techniques. Inspired over the years by the likes of Salgado, Ansel Adams and Elliott Erwitt, it is uncertain how their careers have affected Astrid's creative output but they have most certainly had an impact. Astrid's work always begins with observation. Her eye may be drawn to a beautiful mane, light highlighting refined muscles or the lines of a rider atop his steed, as though one; the rest of the horse or scene becomes irrelevant; her subjects are often moving, making her work impulsive and instinctive, progressing with gut instinct rather than having the luxury of time to be able to think about it. Her focus is upon what is important in the moment – be it the essence of the scene or perhaps the character of the individual animal. Shooting this way can result in often-abstract imagery and Astrid's overall commitment is to producing engaging photography in a fresh and creative way – distinctive imagery that is refined and artistic yet representative. Astrid's ongoing “Grey” series has a clean, monochromatic style which has become something of her signature style; having always loved the classic appeal of black and white, the simplicity of off-setting images against a plain grey background helps draw in the viewer, enabling them to connect with her vision more poignantly.
