Rusty Nail - In the east of Germany the region of Lusatia has for a long time been dominated by the excavation of brown coal from the surface with huge excavators and steel bridges to separate right away coal and rest material. The coal has been transported either by special trains or by long conveyor belts to the large power plants wheras the remnants where dropped at the opposite side of the steel bridges leaving behind long stretches of rock waste and empty space that filled with water. Meanwhile many of these coal fields are emptied and left to nature for recovery. As memorial to this area and the use of sturdy iron machinery a lookout tower was erected with sturdy steel that weathers with a cover of light rust to overlook all this newly gentle wide area - called now Lusatian Lakeland - of forest, fields, channels and lakes inviting for all kind of recreation. This lookout tower soon became known as "Rusty Nail" and displays modern architectural features and elegance constrasting the sturdy iron construction in reminiscence of the former heavy iron machinery. - 2 - Base: The base of the tower invites for visitors taking up some dust from the ground and decorating the wall next the begin of the stairs.
