JOYCE DATILES is a moving image artist and a historian. She is currently one of ten emerging female creatives selected for Creative England's INDUSTRY EQUALS: WOMEN IN SCREEN 2019-2020 and completed her Digital Artist Residency 2019/2020 with Magdalen Arts, Oxford. Her upcoming art film, TO SEE THE CORPSE ALIVE recently received National Lottery funding and is backed by Arts Council England. Her body of work is an eclectic collection of short films and photography for which she has won numerous awards on the film festival and art circuit, exhibiting at the Cannes Film Festival, PRADA Journal, VOGUE Italia, Sundance Film Festival: London, Royal Academy of Art, British Film Institute (BFI), Open City Docs London, Festival of the Moving Image, DC Shorts and Canada Indie, among others. She has been accepted for Directors UK INSPIRE 2019-2020 (mentored by BAFTA-nominated director, Isabelle Sieb) and BFI NETWORK x BAFTA Crew 2018-2019. Joyce co-founded THE SPECTACLE MAKERS PRODUCTIONS LTD (), an independent film, television and mixed media production company. The company’s mission is to produce female-centric narratives that celebrate diversity, with women in lead positions of production. SPECTACLE MAKERS is supported by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and will be based at Somerset House starting in January 2020, operating between London, Oxford and Wales. Alongside her creative work, Joyce is a historian and visual anthropologist. She holds a dual doctorate in ancient history and film, awarded jointly in 2017 by the University College London (UCL) Departments of Anthropology and Greek & Latin, where she is currently an honorary research fellow. She specialises in ancient battle and the concepts of heroism, both in history and on screen. She works between the UK and USA.
