Becalmed with no wind to fill the sails, drifting in ebb current along the shoreline of San Juan Island. Killer whales are conscious breathers, they're always present in the now, acutely aware of their surroundings. To us, drifting through a September afternoon, the surprise seemed intentional. The mature bull Orca cut the serenity at our side then slipped back below into the mystery of his underwater world
