About The Artwork

This piece was commissioned to represent the contemporary opera by John Kefala Kerr which considers the legacy of the fastest Steam train on earth - the Mallard. This is a complex montage of photography which includes the actual train (photographed in York museum) Hexham railway station - various built models, members of the actual cast from the opera's premier in Durham Gala Theatre and lead figures from the period. This work is offered for sale as a one off original artwork signed by the artist. Please ask if you would prefer it framed and mounted.

Born Leeds 1955. Studied Harrogate college of art and Newcastle Polytechnic Fine Art BA Hons. My work uses various media depending on the concept, but tends to often involve some elements of film/video and photography. If there is a theme that runs through my work, it may be said to be a preoccupation with what it means to exist in the 'moment' - that contradictory state that is often implied and yet very rarely experienced. I was an early adopter of open reel b/w video production in the mid 70s, with occasional residencies at broadcast TV stations and educational departments, notably 18months at Brighton Poly as the Arts Councils' Video Artist in residence. Awarded Royal Television Society N.E. craft award for graphics 1996 and winner of the Fuji Professional distinctions award 2004. Video Work purchased by the National Gallery of Canada and the British Film Institute. www.neilarmstrong.me
