The largest and therefore probably the oldest yew tree in Sussex is a female tree at Coldwaltham, where she lurks in a dark corner of St Giles’ churchyard. Her true age has been a matter of hot dispute; her nobly girth has been variously measured at between 9.3 and 9.9m, but yews are notoriously difficult to age by girth alone. A dating method used by the Forestry Commission sets her germination during the Iron Age; local, oral history nearer the time of King Cnut while others believe it may have been planted shortly before the creation of the Church of England, in the mid 16th Century.

This photograph is part of an ongoing series, ‘The Old Ones’ which is a photographic record of the oldest and largest trees surviving in the English county of Sussex.
