The “Hope in Nature” series of screen prints on wood panel were inspired by the people of Japan who planted sunflowers after the earthquake and tsunami which disabled the power supply and cooling of three reactors causing a nuclear accident. Sunflowers are known to remediate toxins from the soil through the root systems. Of course the flowers are not capable of such repair, actually, the nuclear catastrophe is still spilling toxins into the ocean since 2011. The swaths of land and bright yellow flowers brought hope and cheer to the devastation. Nature that heals physically and mentally was the catalyst for making this series of mixed media on paper including screen printing and collage. The imagery started with a zoomed-in image of a single sunflower pollen, smaller than a particle of dust. I made ink drawings and translated them into abstract silk screen prints. Drawings of sunflower pollen were resolved with abstract expressions of hope that nature brings to us. The works are expressions of hope and cheer during a time of climate change.
