The "Arch" series consists of variations of one of the first sculptures I carved in the "Symbiosis" line. There is a feeling of movement, restraint, tension and resolution in this dynamic form full of life and stillness. It's a study of complexity within simplicity. The freestanding sculpture relies on structural balance as an integral aspect of the form. The natural constraints of structure and gravity result in a certain formal integrity. The "Symbiosis" line of sculptures are studies of the relationship between parts and whole, metaphors for social relationship and intuitive connections. I craft these sculptures using fine woodworking hand tools from around the world. Some of the most commonly used are the sloyd knife, Japanese skew knife, Lie-Nielson low angle block plane, Japanese ryoba pull saw and scrapers cut to a variety of customized shapes. "Arch No.4" is the largest of the series preceeding it. In arriving at the final form the process involves engaging with the subtleness and sensitivity of the form (the slightest deviation may result in a greatly perceived change). So, the forms are very finely tuned - so to speak. Holding the smooth form in one's hands and feeling the purity of contour adds to the experience. This sculpture is left with a natural, untreated surface so the "smokey, grassy" aroma of the yellow cedar can be taken in as well. The surface is finished smooth with fine sandpaper.

Mike Sasaki was born in Toronto, Canada. He graduated from the Bachelor of Design Honours program at York University / Sheridan College in 2005. He lived in Tokyo, Japan for 5 years where he was immersed in traditional and modern Japanese culture. The martial arts philosophies have played an important role in his artistic development. In his search for a hands on approach he has found sculpting in wood a wonderful solution. He is currently living in Metro Vancouver and focusing on the metamorphic line of abstract wood forms.
