Metaphorically, the two seemingly separate entities are in reality indivisible, however this is not part of visible nature. The "Invisibility" series makes this idea visible. "Invisibility" also refers to the nestling of this object in space. In an intimate relationship with the surrounding emptiness, the object "blends in" with "absence". The negative (surrounding) space and material form are both considered in the exploration of balance between "inner and outer". The small knot running through this piece was gradually uncovered in the sculpting process. I like the character it adds to the piece as another facet of this natural material. This piece is untreated. The surface is the natural walnut surface dry polished to a gloss. The sculpture is smooth and the contours are carefully formed. The pureness of the curves can be felt under the hand. The tactility of the piece is part of the concept. Using hand tools enables close contact with the wood throughout the process. The form then takes on a very human quality. Using sandpaper in my hand to smooth the piece in the later stages enables me to "mold" the object with fine control into the exact final form.
