About The Artwork

This is the second in the "Symbiosis" series. The series explores fluid looping connections between the main parts. The theme of symbiosis in cultures, architecture and society provides inspiration for this series. This abstract representation of the theme uses formal parts exploring different types of flowing connections symbolizing the aspect of shared space and form. Careful attention is paid to the contours and curves, part of the concept is purity in form. The form which is seemingly aware of the surrounding space "sits in the air" so to speak as it bonds with its environment. The wood is Western Red Cedar. This particular block, which I laminated 2 pieces together for, has some natural spotted colourations in the sapwood (lighter areas) which I think give the piece character. The beautiful gradient is the transition between the sapwood and the heartwood. Part of these wood forms' concept is to show the beauty of the natural wood and to celebrate it. A variety of hand tools were used in the process including chisels, knives, gouges and pull saws. The shaping and smoothing process required careful attention to the drawing/form and its subtleties. These subtle details of the surface contours and curves are extremely sensitive to the integrity of the final form. The beeswax enriches the colours of the wood and provides a lustre to the surface. The flow of the curves in this form are dynamic yet soothing giving the piece and its surroundings a vibrant yet calm quality. Holding the sculpture in the hands and feeling the highly refined curves adds to the viewing experience.
