This piece represents a Lotus Flower, which seeds and blooms simultaneously as a metaphor for cause and effect. It is part of my series “Organics” that seeks to enhance the beauty of the world of living organisms and entities. It is a study of the forms and structures of certain plants, seeds and other organisms. It is a personal morphology analysis, where I examine different patterns of development of plants and processes to uncover where these structures originate and mature during their growth and development. I create an urban landscape where a friction is created between what’s “fake”, what’s simulated and the idea of what’s natural, as a metaphor for the tense situations between the urban scenario and nature; nevertheless, I am gaining awareness of the importance of plants and I consider them the visual poetry between cement and asphalt. By creating another type of “flower” or “plant”, I satisfy a paradox that leads me to think about the real and simulated forces in nature. I create a different level of consciousness of the environment. Furthermore, I enjoy the contrasts between what’s artistic and what’s natural, between the work that has been “created” and the other, the one resulting from the combustion of natural elements. I use the materials giving them properties that exceed their intrinsic qualities; I emphasize their rude industrial power, trying to underline the predominance of what’s industrial in a society that values the consumption, the artificial, the false, the fake, the imitations. In a deeper sense, this work alludes to the perpetual transformation and re-transformation of matter, which constantly re-constitutes itself. It makes reference to the writings of the Shakyamuni Buddha as well as the underlying knowledge and wisdom contained in these “sutras” or extracts of supreme knowledge. “…A lotus seed may be buried in mud for thousands of years, until, when conditions are right, it sprouts, grows and sends forth buds…” I explore these living organisms, to evaluate the intrinsic qualities of what is alive. My work over the past two decades is a crafted and elaborate study of life, in its fascinating simplicity and in its beautiful complexity.
