ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'This is not art' - A Reddit User Welcome to my newest series of sculptures, "This is Not Art". These are all experimental pieces using a lost foam method of sand casting. Each one is a highly unique, original artwork which cannot be reproduced. It's one and done. I'm incorporating organic elements such as wood and agave leaves into the metal casting which determine the flow of metal and along with the gases produced, create unique patterns and patinas. I also am experimenting with borosilicate glass to add color and light. This is new art creation territory, so hop on for the ride... This is the second piece I cast with embedded borosilicate rods and one of the first three themed menorahs. My Dad remarried into an Italian Catholic family, so growing up I was lucky enough to be able to celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas. This menorah was designed as a point of reflection for families that celebrate both holidays. The 5 blue glass dots represent the 5 books of the Torah. The red and yellow added are meant to evoke the Holy Trinity as represented by the mystical qualities of the three primary colors. As a whole, this menorah takes the shape of open welcoming arms to people of all faiths. When lit, the effect is extra special. Standard 5/16" candles fit perfectly. The base is Texas Mesquite which is native to my locale.

Hello and thank you for visiting my profile. I hope you get something out of this creative journey of mine, whether it's a smile or frown, anything that made you look twice is a success in my book. My life's experiences have varied radically from growing up in working class suburbia to treating casualties in a war zone to teaching medical school cadaver anatomy classes to helping build a sculpture at Burning Man to riding a krewe in Mardi Gras and so much more in between. What does it all mean? I'm still trying to figure it out. The older I get, the less I know. My art is a way to share those experiences and to try and make sense of this world and the next. I am constantly seeking out new ways and forms of visual expression. My art often fuses metaphysical and at times, humorous concepts with powerful symbology of shape, form and color to convey superficial and hidden meanings. My goal is to move a viewer, in some way, a bit closer to their own revelation of truth. I believe visual art can serve as an energy conduit between the divine, the artist and the viewer. This relationship transcends time and geography. Many indigenous artistic traditions have understood this essential role of art. It connects us to the cosmos. I see myself as part shaman, part jester and part madman when I am creating a piece of art. Many times, I have little recollection of actually making the work until it is finished. It was meant to be and I am just the conduit. Often I use found and repurposed materials. These have an energy and life all their own and when combined in a unique manner, a harmonic progression is created. Those past lives becomes something new and reborn; the sum greater than the parts. These 'cast-offs' have a beauty and language all their own. Secret past lives waiting to be discovered through an artistic composition. Born in Takoma Park, Maryland USA. Lived and worked in Hawaii, United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea and Spain. Currently based out of San Antonio, Texas making art full time and working with a local non-profit, 10Bitworks Makerspace, teaching DIY skills to anyone wanting to learn.
