Alan Sanchez

I am a Mexican American, a Chicano born in Detroit Michigan, USA. I have been painting since I can remember. Painting, design and music are about the only things that ever interested me. I paint everyday. I feel that being a painter is like any other job. Like a plumber, you get up everyday and go to work. You work hard and hope not to make a mess of things.
I work in series. I like to explore painting and not any one technique or style. My series may last two months or three years. I also work in various styles at the same time. When I weary of hard edge work I move on for awhile to more loose and free work. I need them both. Like fruit, one day I want to eat a peach, the next day I might want an apple.
I like to research subjects for painting as well as looking into my roots. Recently I have been very influenced by the colors of the Mexican tribe called the Huichol.

I have a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. I studied under the professor Aris Koutroulis. I won a residency to study at the New York Studio School in my senior year and only returned to Detroit to graduate. I then returned to New York for 21 years. My education in Art School was great, techniques and freedom. But the real education came from being in New York. The noise, the people, the food and the nights. It all spilled out on the canvas'.

I was showing with Provenance Gallery in Chelsea New York for 13 years starting before I graduated art school in 1982. I have also had one man shows in Detroit and Miami. In France I have had one man shows in Paris in the Marais and in Montparnasse. I also had one man shows in Dijon, Pezanas and many other French cities. I have taken a break from showing for the last two years to concentrate on my latest work. It's ready to show now.
