My work addresses the human condition. A strident reminder of our universal experience that transcends superficial human concepts such as religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, economic class, and illusions of personal choice and free will. We find ourselves in an age where, in a vain attempt to unite despite our differences, we often categorize and group one another based on these individual and superficial ideas. Too often it seems that we ignore the profound aspects which truly unite us all as a global culture and species. As sentient creatures, we all struggle with life’s deepest questions and explore them in very different ways through science, religion and philosophy. Day to day, however, we rarely engage in deep reflection of our own morality, the nature of existence and the state of being and perception that we are all currently experiencing. My work is an attempt to bring our natural state of unknowing and curiosity to the forefront of the viewer’s mind as a reminder of the human condition. The style of my work is a contemporary take on the surrealist approach infused in scientific and philosophical elements. Displaying a disciplined technique and great attention to detail, the stylistic quality and execution of my paintings is illustrative, hard-edged and calculated. While my work is traditional oil and acrylic painting on canvas, I attempt to fuse painting and sculpture by creating three-dimensional, sculpture-like surfaces composed of several small mounted canvases adhered together. The effect of the final result complements the style and creates an interactive piece that the viewer can navigate around. Each painting connects the tangible impermanence of matter with transcendental unity through shape, depth, texture and arrangement. Addressing humankind’s deepest questions, the work illuminates our indelible state of unknowing and curiosity for what we experience as life and reality. Repugnant would be a creature who squanders the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
