Susan Carson

My artistic practice began with portraiture, evolving from intuitive expression to a more deliberate, reflective approach. Through thematic series I explored the concept of identity, developing a distinctive style characterized by flattened elements within simplified compositions. Because of a deepening interest in color, process and perception I turned to abstraction, where I utilize and develop discoveries I made through portraiture.

My background as a graphic designer for art institutions — where I often oversaw fine art reproduction — heightened my sensitivity to nuance and precision. I use both digital and manual tools from that practice in my creative process.

Blurring boundaries between representation and abstraction, I strive to create uncertainty of depth, dimension and perspective. My paintings are designed to create an open visual experience, inviting contemplation and interpretation.

I currently live in Connecticut. My paintings have been in a number of exhibitions and are in numerous private collections.
