Svetlana Petrova paints small. Almost the entire body of work on view sits at twelve by
twelve inches, and this constraint is not incidental — it is the key to understanding what
she is doing. These are not grand statements about nature. They are close encounters with
it, the kind that happen when you stop and really look at a single leaf, a single bloom, a
single petal catching light. The intimacy of scale creates an intimacy of attention.
The technique is acrylic on canvas, worked with a fluidity that suggests water, breath,
and movement. Svetlana does not render botanical forms so much as she releases them.
Her petals are not delineated but implied — built from layered washes and gestural
passages that pool and spread across the small canvas, creating edges that are soft, alive,
and slightly unpredictable. There is a convincing wetness to much of the work, a sense
