About Vasya Dmytryk

Vasya Dmytryk (b.1991, Ukraine) is a sculptor who works in the fields of public art, conceptual sculptures and installations. Vasya's pieces thread figuration and abstraction, they nevertheless recall classical figurative traditions across a range of cultures and historical periods. He creates sculptures primarily out of wood, metal, composites, and found objects. Vasya lives and works in Odesa, Ukraine.

When I work with a material, I explore its sensory and symbolic nature. Each material has its own
specific language, and working by hand reveals it. I follow the language of wood, metal or styrofoam,
and I bring new words to this process, creating a new dictionary. I am interested in the search for
primary foundations, the search for realness at the stage of its birth. By using discarded and recycled
materials to reveal these foundations, I repair our relationship to the primitive vitality of the world.
