Wouter van de Koot (°Zwolle (NL), 1978) is an independent Dutch visual artist based in Antwerp, Belgium. He graduated from the HKU (Utrecht School of Fine Arts) in 2001, after which he went on to win the Utrecht Young Talents Prize and was a nominee for the Royal Dutch Painting Prize. Wouter's main interest lies with painting and performance art, often related to reenacted personal experiences, fears, dreams and fantasies. Wouter’s visual language is heavily influenced by the aesthetics of religious art, horror movies and graphic novels. His work is mostly dominated by male figures in situations of mental or physical distress, bordering on the grotesque. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group-exhibitions in galleries and other venues in Belgium, Holland, the UK, Germany and the USA and is currently represented by Morning Mania Management (UK). About his work he says: “My work is based on performances I create and execute, often related to the exploration of intimate fears and fantasies. Those performances are usually done without an audience and serve the sole purpose of creating new source material for my paintings, drawings and videos. I am fascinated by the fragility of the human body. Recurring themes are vulnerability, consolation, mutual dependence, trust, beauty and decay. I strive to make pieces which are open to multiple interpretation, balancing between the attractive and the repellent, between disgust and fascination”.
