For nearly five decades Steve Hix’s photographic path has evolved along with his subject matter. He began working in news and documentary photography in the late 1960’s, shooting anti-war protests for the Associated Press, Time and Newsweek. In 1974 he joined a very large commercial studio located in Kansas City where he learned many of the intricacies of studio lighting.
In 1980 Steve started Steve Hix Photography where he expanded into location assignments in addition to operating a 4,000 square foot studio space in downtown KC. He grew his business quickly and his client list began to include major national corporate, fashion, product and advertising companies. He moved his operations to Austin, TX in 1983 where he focused on the top technological companies of the world.
After working six days a week for two years straight Steve closed his studio in 1988 to travel around the world for a year to refresh his vision. He returned with over 150,000 stock photographs that still sell today. He opened a new studio upon his return in Kansas City, but began focusing on national and international location assignments. Commissioned Art Projects:
2000 Ocean Spray – Project included documenting the Indian culture harvesting cranberries in British Columbia. Opening show was at the Boston Center for the Arts on the Warf. It then traveled to five major cities in the U.S. and Canada.
