ABOUT THE ARTWORK
During one of the COVID lockdowns, I wanted to paint a portrait and found my African statues to be perfect, covid proof sitters. The portrait has been painted from life under natural light. The statue represents a spirit spouse or Blolo Bla, and was carved by a Baule artist from Ivory Coast. These spirit spouses were highly personal objects, kept privately and cared for by their owners. I hope to have captured some of its mystery. The painting (oil on panel, 24 x 30 cm) is being sold including a handmade frame. Outer dimensions of the frame are 15.9 x 18.2 inch, with a depth of about 2 inches (46.2 x 40.3 x 5.3 cm).
