TOM BATEMAN ARTIST

81 year old undiscovered Artist who has worked in isolation for many years.
During 2020 this lock down year due to Covid 19 Tom has been inspired by work of Austrian contemporary painter Voka .

Toms latest work being large brightly coloured portraits ranging from well known celebrities such as David Attenborough and Martin Luther King Jr.

Until recently Tom spent time living in South Africa and England. He now lives in South Africa permanently.

As an 18 year old he began painting using oil paints and developed his skill. While working in the paint and textile industries he gained knowledge of the use of colour and the ability to create his own paint colours.

When Tom first started using oil paint, he used oil paint from start of finish of the work. 15 years ago he began to use Acrylic paints. Acrylic was used to start to form the basis of the painting once the layout was completed he would continue to completion using oil paint. Tom has recently changed his painting technique now using Acrylic paint from start to completion.

Tom is a figurative painter often his work having metaphysical content .Toms style being influenced by the American artist David A Leffel.

Tom Bateman born 1943 Teesside England, educated at Arthur Head Comprehensive School and awarded a government grant to attend Middlesbrough Art College but studied chemistry instead.

1971 he moved to South Africa and studied at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth gaining National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.

Spent his career in the Paint or Textile industries as a development chemist or colourist but persisted in oil painting from time to time.

2006 he began painting full time in his own studio and sought technical help from South African artists B A Moolman and Gregory Kerr, who has a doctorate in art criticism .

Tom has exhibited at various South African galleries: Port Elizabeth St Georges gallery and various other galleries in Port Elizabeth
