About The Artwork

The Post-it note having been popularised by the simple and lightweight management of the Agile Methodology, is used as the tool in conceptually designing products, businesses and teams.  "Build The App" delivers an imagined business through the planned tasks of its team. As businesses start up they aim to create a product and a convincing investment story - enough to get them to funding. They need to be as “lean” and as “agile” as possible on this journey, but many of the things a tech startup will do in the early days are common across many of their ilk. In their path to change the world many start out in much the same way. This work is an exploration of the early startup, and is based on the artist's first hand experience of working with startup teams and of launching her own businesses. It's both a challenge to the would-be entrepreneur, and a fond look at the diversity of skills required to launch the next big thing in tech.

Having studied at Central Saint Martins in the early nineties, fascinated by how the early Internet was changing everything, I began working with Digital Media. As an early adopter - and someone who was professionally at the centre of this emerging landscape - I was exposed not just to the new technologies, but to new ways of working, communicating and selling in this brave new world.   I witnessed and helped to construct the emergence of social media, of blogging, of mobile; I *was* that person who first talked about spinning up businesses, co-working, going to unconferences; I hung out with the Web 2.0 kids in the mid 2000s.   Early attempts to develop digital ideas into businesses gave me an immersion into the creative world of startups and a culture of ideas and aspiration even more enigmatic and enclosed than the art world. My work draws from my diverse technology and business experiences; I explore the themes of digital content production and ownership, data, community engagement (real people on the Internet), money, ideas, power, and ambition. Visually, my art is punctuated by bold, poppy imagery, slogans and statements; as commentary on or challenge to the status quo. I don’t see myself as a digital artist; or even a “Post Internet Artist”; I’m a conceptual artist who might happen to work with digital technology or might happen to work online, but who might also work with paint or mixed media. I might also happen to work as an entrepreneur, and to create a business as readily as I might create an artwork.
