We are the Earth is comprised of a photograph, acrylic paint, found objects in nature (bones, leaves, flowers, stones, crystals) and resin. The base materials for the work consist of a wooden paneled canvas that provides the platform for the adhesion of a rolled photographic canvas, a fine art photography print. The canvas print, in this case a double exposure digital photograph, is adhered to the wood using a clear acrylic varnish. Acrylic Paint is added along with the objects that I found in nature, which are all placed in a careful and meticulous fashion, finally cemented in resin. This specific piece of art was my first large scale piece of its kind, created in my studio in Brooklyn in 2019. This piece was inspired by the colors of my travels, the deserts, trees, mountains and sunsets. The human depicted is myself, it is a self-portrait captured in Great Sand Dunes National Park. The work is abstract, the intention is for the subjectivity to stand out, for the meaning to be different for each viewer, just as the piece itself can hang in any direction. The composited images were taken in Colorado in 2018 and the mixed media work was created in 2019.

Elsa Marie Keefe is an artist who explores body positivity through photography, mixed media collage, and book-making. Her complete immersion into the nudist lifestyle has shaped her creative practice. She integrates the figure into nature to comment on significant issues such as sexuality, societal oppression, spirituality, and the sublime. The large-scale pieces are rich in texture and vulnerability. By incorporating natural elements back into the artwork, such as bones, flora, crystals, and dirt, her process emphasizes the cyclical nature of our time here on Earth. Her work has been exhibited nationally and across the boroughs of New York City, including The Blue Gallery, New York; The Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn; Ziome, Miami; and Ophelia’s in Denver, Colorado. She has been featured at Miami Basel, The Other Art Fair, SOHO House, and The Southampton History Museum. Recent interviews with the artist were broadcasted on TNT Radio and available to read on Northshore Magazine and Saatchi Art Blog. The three books published by Elsa are titled Born Wild, Delirium, and Salvation. Blending her commercial and personal fine art practices, Elsa partners with people and organizations to promote healthy naturist lifestyles. She facilitates women’s healing circles and collaborative photographic experiences alongside her art. Elsa Marie Keefe is based between Boston and the Hudson Valley of New York State and is available for conversation, collaboration, and commissions.
