Our internal sense that the prime is behind us and the destructive thought that we are now "NOT" (who we were). But as philosophers say, a part of us must die to make room and rebuild ourselves through our past selves. "I Was" is a symbolic punishment that we inflict upon ourselves. Thoughts that act like a lash we are powerless to stop. The need to observe the wounds and ensure they do not heal until the pain renders us numb.
