This long skinny painting is one of two created together on cradled panel. It is part of my 'Exploring Space' series done which focused on mixed media exploration of shape and visual texture. The title "Add & Subtract" was inspired by the process of adding and subtracting paint. This long format is quite challenging because it needs to keep the eye moving across the entire surface. It was this challenge I found so interesting. You can get endlessly fascinated by the variety of marks and textures. It's very versatile because it can be hung either horizontally or vertically. The 3 inch black edge creates a sculptural effect and this means this painting can be installed right away and doesn't require framing.

Canada
"Transcending Nature with Tactile Layers of Color & Texture" Shirley Williams is a Canadian artist living and working near the US border, best known for her abstract paintings focused on layered color and tactile texture. Color and texture convey emotion at a subconscious level. Williams' paintings combines these two elements to evoke associations with the energy of landscape and nature. Nature alters our consciousness and lift our spirits. In the same way that being in nature energizes us, Williams' intention is to express this subtle energy boost through paint. Shirley Williams grew up moving often across Canada and Europe, inspired by art in every city. She worked in Toronto for many years as a documentary film producer until 1991 when she began painting full time. Her paintings have been exhibited and collected widely in both Canada and the US.
