An Isle of the Dead Richter 2017 Oil on canvas 70 x 100 x 2 cm This is my contemporary version of the Symbolist painting ‚Die Toteninsel‘ by the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin. The painting already impressed me as a child when I first saw it in a lexicon. Böcklin painted five versions. Here I am referring to the third version. This third version (made in 1883) had a changing history with different owners. In 1936 this version was offered for sale on the art market, and Adolf Hitler acquired it. (First he hung it in the Berghof, Berchtesgaden, later in the New Reich Chancellery, Berlin.) Today the painting is exhibited in the Alte Nationalgalerie/ Berlin.
