Chattel and Inheritance: The Orderly Transition of Resources Painting

Part of the Ascension Series and a continuation of the artist's exploration of social rules and gender. In this work women, animals and real estate are goods of value that flow intergenerationally. The composition assembles itself in the absence of gravity and individual elements float on the background of saturated color. A vertical horizon line is a recurrent element in the artist’s work, with an emphasis on the line of white at the horizon. The color of the iridescent silk applied to the letters changes subtly as the painting is viewed from different angles The patches of midnight blue antique silk velvet swallow light in a manner not possible with pigments and provide a void to counterbalance the movement of color. The thick handmade paper on which it is painted allows for numerous layers of heavy pigment. This work is multidirectional, with the intent and perceived feeling of the piece altered by its orientation.
