Dancer Painting

This painting is influenced by the rich Indian history and culture, based on a Devadasi. In Southern India during ancient times, female dancers were dedicated to worship and serve a deity in the temples for their whole life. A ceremony agreeing to this dedication was like getting married to God; at this special ceremony, dancers used to perform traditional dances and sing to greet the almighty God. In this painting, I have tried to tie the dancer's grace and joy together and emphasise the dancer's happiness. The dancer is draped in a brightly coloured south Indian silk sari and gold jewellery. Keeping in mind the great ancient architecture of India, I have also painted a backdrop of the exquisite carvings that mark ancient temple walls.
