About The Artwork

A fish can never rest. Neither can a human who's task is to haunt the fish. A rest is only an illusion, a temporary loss of the sense of life's true weight. Some people are good with managing illusions. But fish are better. For a fish, everything is an illusion. Otherwise its life would be unbearable. Humans make things hard for themselves believing they can tell the difference between what is real and what is not real. Humans visit the dreams of fish causing them anxiety. Unable to deal with sleeplessness, fish seek professional help. But these professionals are powerless. Therapy is pointless. In order for the fish to get a good night's sleep, the professionals would need to discover why humans show more interest in the dreams of fish than in their own misconceptions of reality. This piece is a part of a 12-piece series titled "CATCH" - the pieces share the format as well as the main motif of the juxtaposition of the fish world with the human world. Each of the pieces is created in a fish crate collected from a beach on the east coast of Istria, Croatia. Violent north-western winds knock these crates overboard from fishing boats coming in and out of the harbor. Each piece is a tableau of sort representing a stage in the development of human destiny. This piece was inspired by the 1981 installation (and photograph) "Revenge of the Goldfish" by Sandy Skoglund.

Born in Slavonski Brod (Croatia, 1975.) I live and work in Liznjan (Istria, Croatia) where we, my wife Natalija Grgorinic, our son Ljubomir and I, run ZVONA i NARI, an artist residency and a library. For the past 25 years Natalija and I have been engaged in literary work, publishing novels in both Croatian and English. In a sense, my visual work is continuation of our joint artistic preoccupations, another form of articulating ideas we share. It is also a manifestation of my belief that all art is an endeavor to both transform but also create and expand the world.
