About The Artwork

I came across this pasture somewhere in the countryside near Abilene, Texas, where I live. Wooden gates and fences are not encountered much anymore, replaced by more modern fencing. I was taken in by the vibrant beauty of the grasses and weeds, contrasted with the sun-bleached and decaying wooden fence and gate. Who went through that gate, I wondered? How long ago? Where were they going? Chances are the pasture was once used for cattle. What brought that enterprise to an end? Was it a tragedy? Did the next generation have loftier plans, abandoning the inherited life of cattle rancher? The vibrant green and yellows of the weeds and grasses were striking in their contrast to the decaying wood. I was drawn in, and I enjoy reliving what I imagine the past held in this mysterious place every time I look at my painting. The piece is fitted with a hanging wire. It is a gallery wrapped heavy duty canvas with edges painted in the colors and patterns of the front. It requires no frame. The surface is finished with a UV-resistant acrylic coating. It is signed.

I am a Texas artist and have painted for most of my 71 years, being from a family of artists. My mother's youngest sister, aunt Patsy, spent a lot of time with me, guiding and encouraging me, and I credit her for my passion for art. She painted under the name of "von." When she died in August of 2018, I began placing "von" somewhere on the face of each painting as an acknowledgment of her role in my artistic endeavors. My inspirations come from my home environment in Texas. Things that I have taken for granted all my life are now frequent subjects for art. Mesquites, cactus, old barns and shacks, windmills, wooden fence posts, wildflowers and the like are favorite subjects. I am a colorist, and I enjoy using color to give new life to otherwise fading beauty. In addition to color, I strive for dimension, movement, depth and unusual perspective.
