About The Artwork
"Gilded Joy" Is apart of my body of work entitled "Black Love in Daylight-A Devotional to Black Men".This body of work explores the tender moments of black manhood which call to their humanity and the overall beauty of their experience. I like to incorporate nature in my work particularly insects because they bring out the magic of everyday life. "Gilded Joy" was the last painting I made for the show and it definitely brought a boost of energy to the collection. It was a pleasure to paint! I wanted to highlight a very misunderstood type of black man that I find can have the purest hearts. In "Gilded Joy" a young man is showing off his gold grill. And in that moment, a lady bug decides to hang out on is shoulder. I believe when things like this happens, the insect recognizes that person has good energy. And this example about how nature taps in with us and invites us to take in the moment.
