The concept of myth changes from generation to generation. In ancient Greece, we had Gods and Goddesses and in the middle ages, we had saints and sinners. But in the cinema, particularly in the 1960s, we started to see ant-heroes, outsiders, mavericks, and also the emergence of cinema Icons to reflect our anxieties and desires. This series of paintings explore these different aspects of contemporary myth but also the patina of cinema photos which take on an individual texture and identity as the paper/image deteriorates. Gerard Tunney uses the images of the cinema to explore the ambivalence of contemporary myth. Lee Marvin was the embodiment of the villain but his screen persona was also at the times the hero. These two stills are taken from "Pointblank" and "the man who shot liberty Vallance"

I have been a professional fine artist since graduating from Newcastle university in the mid 80'S ,I have supplemented my studio work by teaching or gallery work. I am currently based in the North-East where I recently re-located from Cambridgeshire. I have shown widely across the northern region but also the South and London galleries. Most of my paintings are acrylic on canvas which combines the spontaneity of watercolour with the sturdiness of oil paint. Acrylic dries fairly quickly, so that I can generate an immediacy within the work as it progresses. This way, the paintings always retain the element of freshness that I am trying to capture . Other paintings are completed in oil paint which gives the work that jewel-like quality unique to oils. These technical experiences have enabled me to participate in demonstration classes for magazines ,books , workshops etc. .
