Ellie Papadopoulou (born 1994) is a Greek artist based in Athens. She explores colour, mark making, and the ways in which subconscious drawing can be effected by one’s environment. Intuitive gestures, music, rhythm, and meditation are fueling her artistic practice. By creating shapes that border figuration and abstraction, she depicts the memories and sensations of a place rather than describing its likeness. She is inspired by nature, poetry, dreams and imaginary landscapes. In her process she uses paint thinned down with lots of water as a way to embrace the fluidity of femininity but also the power of transformation and healing. Her paintings hold a metaphor for all things subconscious, feminine, intuitive, subliminal. She is interested in fragmented parallel realities where figuration can emerge but also hide and transform into something else. The process of painting is like trying to remember a dream or even something that may or may not have happened.
