Ned Kelly is an iconic figure in Australia. Sydney Nolan popularised the naive image of Kelly's armoured helmet in his Kelly series. Australia suffered a severe bushfire season immediately prior to the the Covid19 pandemic. The pandemic restrictions encouraged me to re-investigate non-indigenous Australian art, specifically Fred Williams tree studies. This painting views Australia's environmental catastrophe through Ned Kelly's eyes. Australia had a love- affair with fossil fuels and speed - a blinkered, doomed relationship symbolised by the restricted view through Kelly's metal visor.
