We are only halfway into the year, but I feel 2020 marks an important turning point in our history.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, just as I was thinking about how the world had changed and things couldn't get any worse and strange, and how these times were going to be a turning point in history, I witnessed the horrific video of the murder of George Floyd.
It's difficult to describe the emotions that I felt witnessing this heartless crime. Shock, disbelief, appalment, outrage, anger and above all extreme sadness.
I just had to respond in the only way I feel I can: through my art.

One of my favorite works had been described as a "stairway to heaven" by many people, and I decided to symbolically turn it upside down and create a tribute to George Floyd, and all victims of police brutality out of racial prejudice.

The focus of this painting is on the emotion in the eyes. I have used black paint to first make a rough sketch and outline what I wanted to portray. I then filled in with Acrylic paint. On the right side of the painting you will find written lines with the words "I can't breathe" in gold.
The background is of a Turquoise Acrylic and has a large corner covered in 24ct Gold. It is ready to hang (not supposed to be framed!)

Jacqueline Mac Mootry-Everaert is a Dutch artist who lived and worked in Brazil, the Caribbean and The Netherlands. She travelled around the world for 15 years, finding inspiration on all (but one) continents. She has exibited in London, New york, Paris, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf and other major cities. Her work is held in private collections around the globe. Dynamic colors, rich depth and atmosphere through layers and textures are the artist's trademark. Jacqueline received a 3-year classical education in 17th Century techniques and realistic oil painting in The Netherlands, and more recently in figure/nude drawing at the Klassieke Academie Groningen, also in The Netherlands. Since 2016 she found her passion in Abstract Expressionism, in an effort to counterbalance the negativity that seemed to flood the world (the aftermath of terrorism, hybrid warfare, covid, polarisation, racism, political repression) and contributing in a ever so small way, to a more positve, beautiful reality through the power of bold and vivid color. You may contact Jacqueline at www.macmootry-everaert.com directly or via Instagram jacquelinemacmootryeveraert to discuss any of her works or to comment on her work.
