“Noli me tangere’” is the phrase spoken by Jesus to the Magdalene when she recognized him after his resurrection, the morning after. This event came to my mind when, on a Sunday early morning, I saw a young woman, clad in evening gown, having breakfast by herself, after a night out. The painting is also an homage to George Condo.

My painting is rooted in my Italian origin and past, but this country – the US – has enriched my human lexicon and expanded my archive of characters. At the core of my artwork are the primary existential relations – from class and income to gender and love – with their contradictions and often painful inconsistencies. In recent years, however, my work has shifted from an introspective outlook to a focus on the configurations of myth in our society, environment, and politics. Most of the time I approach this subject with humor, and all the time with metaphors. I try to produce narratives rather than providing closures or solutions. The human couple, with its stories, idioms, and archetypes, is one of the subjects I am most passionate about. I care to emphasize that my visual art does not lend itself to literal interpretation. I find, for instance, that splitting a whole picture into panels may enable the viewers to make up their own story. And on occasion, the use of gold paint helps me break the constraints of time and history so as to lift my images to an ageless dimension.
