The sea is inspiring and this painting is the sea frozen. Although one recognises the movement of the sea the waves in this painting are static. To get this effect I worked with acrylics and mixed gloss textures.

Born in 1984 in Luxembourg to British parents, Elinor Rowlands (FRSA) is a visual, sound and word artist who currently lives and works in London. Inspiration Elinor finds her inspiration in both the natural world and the urban environment. Her observations of people, nature, poetry, music and photography all contribute to her artwork which is an expression of emotions through these encounters. Colour is the master stroke and these colours can be vibrant and bold with vivacious jewel-like colours drawn from nature and her own internal landscape while the subtle blues and greens of the sea and sky recur in many of her paintings. Elinor paints from her interior world across a rich territory which she uses as an endless resource. Dreamlike and meditative layered spaces are created in a fast-paced action and gesture and using her hands Elinor maps out and feels her way across the surface to connect with it directly. Portraits are painted in response to quiet moments when she communicates through her painting in a conversation of sorts with her immediate contacts. Their eyes gaze at us, expressive and kind. Elinor uses a variety of media, experimenting with acrylics, inks, oils, watercolours, oil pastels, glitter and resin and often combines these materials with cloth, lace or natural finds. Her pieces of art are inspired by her experiences and the way she sees people and places in different colours. She builds up her paintings in layers but at the same time allows herself the freedom to transform and remains contemplative about her work until she feels it is complete. Her expression is on the one hand full of life and enthusiasm but also thoughtful and powerful in its message. Elinor also makes short films using her own soundscapes, photography and poetry. Elinor has exhibited her paintings in China, the UK and Luxembourg and her short films have been shown in the UK and New York. She is currently an artist in residence with Drake’s Music (London) and is the founder of Magical Women, a collective for neurodivergent female artists.
