"One Simit, Please! [Viva La Vida]" Painting

Patrick Gourgouilat draws on his childhood memories and in particular on a trip to Turkey in 1974... At the age of 9, the artist recreates, like a patchwork, the images anchored in his memories of his stay in Istanbul. "One Simit, Please! "features several elements: a pink bear dancer, a water carrier, slippers, an evocation of the Basilica of Saint Sophia (which has since become a Muslim place of worship), a blue-coloured lantern, flowers and sesame seeds and a saz, a traditional Turkish musical instrument. In this postcard, there is of course a simit, the famous round bread covered with sesame seeds. "I still have the taste of that bread in my mouth! With my childhood eyes, I found this bread so singular and so good" adds the artist. In this work, the artist uses the codes of Pop Art (choice of bright and tonic colours, for example) as well as a naive and figurative representation. A strange character slips into this fantastic imagery. Dressed in white and red as a nod to the Turkish flag, he appears like a magician. For, in this journey to the gates of the Orient, Patrick Gourgouillat already perceived the enchantment that travel brings.
