About The Artwork

The opposites attract, or so they say. But some just brush shoulders and swim they way. This short poetic verse came to my mind when I watched koi in a pond, It is common to paint koi fish in pairs or in a shoal, all going the same way. But I noticed that koi fish are much less organised that we thought, they move all over the place. They probably have a life of their own, which we don't know about, although they never lose their grace and tranquility. These two opposite species of koi fish are painted with Japanese ink on beige Chinese rice paper. Generally, koi fish are a very popular subject in Japanese art. They symbolise prosperity, good fortune and perseverance in life. Koi (cultured carp) have been admired for centuries for their beautiful colour patters and graceful swimming. The painting is signed, sealed, wet-mounted on backing rice paper and ready to be framed or mounted on a silk scroll. Please use acid-free adhesives when framing. It is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Please note that small creases may form due to the nature of the paper. Colours may differ due to differences in devices.

Canadian artist based in Malta. I studied oil painting in the South Studio Atelier in Malta. The Atelier follows the great traditions of the Florence Academy of Art, so do I. The transience of life pushes me to create, to capture the moments of beauty I see all around. I also studied Asian art, in China, Canada, and in Japan. Fragile rice paper gives a different feeling. It's the best canvas to express the complex simplicity of ink painting. I am using centuries-old Japanese recipe to mount my own artwork.
