Vietnam
Tung was born in 1966, and consequently, his childhood occured during the most brutal years of the Vietnam war. Over 26 years of painting, the evolution of Tung's art follows closely the transformation of his philosophical view. At the early stage of his career, his compositions adopted baroque classicism, characterized by realistic and intricate details, as well as linear depth through intense lighting and shading. Later, his arts were greatly influenced by post-impressionists such as Édouard Manet and Paul Gauguin. During this period, the strong personal expression was the focus of his art, and was characterized through rugged brushstrokes and dark tones. At the present stage, Tung's style is drawn closer to the essence of minimalism, while achieving a multi-dimensional depth. His works are infused with bold colors and inconventional techniques, built on the foundation of fauvism and abstract expressionism. While his approach is inspired by modernist pioneers such as Henri Matisse and Jackson Pollock, his unique outlook on the world substance distinguishes his compositions from the rest. As his sense of ego-free spirituality is conveyed through simple yet elegant presentation, his passion remains relentless. Through his works, Tung wishes to evoke a contemplative and meditational resonance in his viewers. While Tung was professionally trained in advanced western techniques and has experimented with diverse artistic approaches and models, a constant throughout his works is the element of his heritage. What people will find among his collections, is a subtle sense of oriental touch, more specifically, an indochine undertone, conveyed through various means.
