It is said that schooled artists tend to work on three major themes throughout their lifetime: landscape, the figure and still life. At the time this painting was created, I had been working primarily with the human figure, particularly the female form, so my return to still life marked an exciting return to a subject that had been set aside for a little while. Still life presents the unique challenge of connecting the viewer with the work. It is human nature to connect with the representation of the body and with landscape. We identify with the person in the picture or with the landscape because we perhaps visited the location. In still-life there is perhaps less of an association. The artist must rely on color, the gesture and textures to reach the viewer.
The pear is on a white tablecloth. In the background you see depicted one of my paintings from the vessel series.

This oil painting is done on 2/8 inch thick Masonite board mounted on a 1 inch deep pine support. The edges have been painted black. The work is signed on the front. It comes accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Stewart Fletcher’s paintings, drawings and works on paper have been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions over the past forty years. His paintings, drawings and works on paper are part of several private international collections in over 20 countries and in 36 American States. Known for his fascination with the human body, Fletcher explores various concepts beyond the representational image. The great equalizer he believes is when one's clothing is removed. All identifiers and societal statuses disappear and the real person appears. Fletcher does not believe that his work is erotic, however some people do because of their social, religious and regional upbringing. He often uses humour and satire to convey his views on the world around him..
