About The Artwork

Trichroma Trichroma, the title of the series, represents specific parameters of my creative process. Each piece is created using only three colors, a chromatic nod to molecular structure. The three-color process can be used to create any color, just as the combination of protons, electrons, and neutrons combine to create every form. The series is focused on the transience of existence. The atomic substructure of form fascinates me. All matter is composed of identical parts yet, for brief moments of time, can be discerned as varying structures. A sea of atoms, vibrating with energy, fluctuates in and out of shapes, environments, and lifeforms. I explore this ever-changing morphological process through the abstraction of microscopy images and the manipulation of depth of field, creating pieces with fluidity and an implied biology.

sdtompkins@live.com Two-dimensional work: Inspired by microscopy images, themes of spiritual energy and hidden knowledge, my work explores the invisible realms in which we are enveloped, but rarely acknowledge. Sculpture: My mixed media sculptures focus on the psyche, ritual and meaning-making. The works deconstruct the transcultural aspects of ritual, sacred tool/ ritual object evolution, and the role biology plays in the archetypal development of deities. The pieces raise questions surrounding the origins of belief and spiritual identity.
