I focus on light: the way that light permeates and shapes our world, and how our practices in that world are in turn suffused with light. As a Brooklyn native, I choose abstract forms that resemble the urban landscape of my youth. I was born in 1973 in New York City and grew up in a small apartment in Manhattan, walls covered with oriental rugs. My art today reflects the patterns of these rugs and our cramped apartment as well as my early exposure to the symbolism of Klee and scale of Rothko. I now often begin with painting on canvas but usually cut those paintings up into smaller pieces and mount them on movable materials. This way I extend the creative process to the viewer via mosaics and collages that are re-configurable over time. In 2004, while struggling to create large-format canvases in a cramped New York City apartment, I discovered the potential of “bits”; works that could be worked in discreet pieces and assembled later.  Bits evolved into pieces comprised of hundreds of temporarily affixed miniature prints and paintings, which the viewer is able to interact with. Today I live and work in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. In my studio I paint on raw canvas, cut up and reconfigure the canvases, and also work with large beams of reclaimed wood which I have rescued from nearby demolitions.
