The surface is not flat. The parallel lines show how the surface is curved. From one perspective, the lines are all perfectly straight and parallel. As your perspective changes the lines grow concave and convex. The focal point of this painting is on the top and bottom edges, midpoint. This area pinches in or spreads out depending on your perspective. The subtle variance in very dark, non black colors is sophisticated.
