The legend of how Raven stole the sun, commonly told by the original peoples of Northwestern America, is a story that returns to me again and again, often unconsciously. The reason for this probably has to do with the Elder who regularly visited my elementary, old frayed suitcase in tow full of anim...

Hello wanderer, welcome to my art oasis! It is my hope that you find rest and wonder here in the form of colour and line. My name is Leah Friesen. I am a Canadian art student who enjoys making pieces that flow, move, and roar. My only boss in this journey is God and my only employees are my hands. I was born at the turn of the millennium in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, and moved to Kitchener, Ontario when I was nine years old. I find myself inspired by furred and feathered creatures, the night sky, musical instruments, legends, and folklore. I respond to my inspiration via a process that involves strong hues (mostly primary colours), spontaneously applied, which are then often complemented by strong and purposeful lines. I spend most of my time with acrylic paint but have recently been trying to teach myself oil painting too. I love how acrylic is so bold yet forgiving, freeing me to be more spontaneous. In my sketchbook, I prefer ink to graphite, because it is also bold and doesn't smudge between the pages. I don't have a studio, and instead opt to follow the sun around the house, setting up my easel or music stand (also used to hold sheet music sometimes!) at this and that window with a cup of tea that I've mistakenly dipped my brush in too many times. In the summer I sit outside in the gazebo with my table easel, alternating between working and watching the hummingbirds zoom about the garden. I enjoy long walks, good music, and of course the love you and I have in common... art! So, again, welcome, I am so glad you are here!
