the head chefs nickname was 'Patrick Bateman' the character from American Psycho. A bleached blonde gym junkie, he had calluses on the knuckle of his middle finger where he would bite down to stifle his frustration, on bad days he would draw blood. A bully prone to verbal abuse and meltdowns when the stress of service was at its peak. One day he asked, across the pass, in an accusatory tone, if I had a problem with the way he spoke to people and if there was anything I wanted to say. without thinking I cheerfully blurted out, "no im really proud of the way I talk to you, a few years ago I would have stabbed you in the throat by now" I may have been holding a chef knife as long as my fore arm at the time... Patrick Bateman didn't speak to me for a few days after that. we all have baggage, respect is a beautiful gift, we must first afford it ourself before it can be given to others
