About The Artwork

Like a lot of my recent work, this painting features natural objects − in this case things like rocks, leaves and part of a root - placed within an overall abstract design. Although the objects that I have included in the composition aren't pretty in themselves, (in the way that flowers are, for example), they have lots of interesting details and textures, and the more you examine them, the more fascinating they become. The root (bottom right) that the picture is named after is part of the root system of a kind of reed that grows along river banks here in southern Turkey. Heavy rain often uproots these reeds and washes them downriver to the sea. The roots often wash up on the beach, where I collected this one. This picture was exhibited at one of Turkey's biggest art fairs and now hangs in a doctor's office in Istanbul.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
