About The Artwork

The subject of this work is Coffee Grounds Reading, an ancient Turkish tradition once widespread in countries influenced by the Ottoman Empire, including ours. The painting, a self-portrait, embodies superstition. It captures a personal image formed from coffee grounds just prepared in my cup. The purpose is to read the past, perceive the present, and predict the future. To predict the future in coffee grounds, after drinking, the saucer is placed on the cup, rotated counterclockwise, spreading the grounds. Then, the cup is inverted and left untouched until it cools. Interpreting the reading involves seeing the cup in two halves—horizontal sections representing past and future. Shapes at the bottom indicate the past, while those on top suggest the future. Right-side images are positive, left-side ones imply negativity. The interpreter must act swiftly, trusting the initial images induced by the coffee grounds. A circle or ring symbolizes union or marriage; a circle with a dot signifies pregnancy; a fish indicates financial luck, a rat suggests financial loss. A peacock represents self-confidence, while the devil reflects fear. A clear line implies a path to take, and a square or rectangle evokes thoughts of a new home. The artwork can be seen as advice against putting too much faith in certain rumors, urging one to think twice about the contemplated action. It might be viewed somewhat ironically, but not with ignorance.

A primary reason why I chose the world of art was the opportunity to visualize the world we live in through a different lens and explore various perspectives. It's about admiring the world despite the challenges an artist faces at the beginning of their journey. The goal is to captivate a diverse audience with ideas that can resonate with people from all walks of life, opening their eyes to new approaches and fostering a broader appreciation for art. I chose the path of art, setting aside sports, to illustrate my own world, addressing certain ironic situations that surround us at every step, such as superstitions. For these, I have created a collection of paintings inspired by the works of the famous surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
